ABS Brake System Parts for Cars and Trucks

ABS stands for Anti-lock Braking System and it&rsquo;s been around a lot longer than one might think. The first noted uses of ABS for automatic braking systems were used in the 1920s on trains and aircraft. There were also attempts to implement the ABS style brakes on automobiles in the 1960s but for this application, the technology was a bit expensive and &ldquo;not reliable&rdquo; enough for the automotive market. The Ferguson P99 racecar, Jensen FF, and the all-wheel drive Ford Zodiac were the test subjects for the mechanical ABS systems. The Modern ABS system that we see in cars and trucks today was invented in 1971 by Mario Palazzetti, who was affectionately known as Mr. ABS. Fun Fact: He named the system Antiskid and sold it his invention rights to Bosch who renamed it ABS.

How does ABS work? There are four wheel speed sensors, one located on each wheel. These sensors are designed to detect if a tire is beginning to skid as you are breaking. The ABS system releases the brake on that wheel a bit to allow it to roll, returning traction to your tires and control of the direction of the vehicle to the driver. If a driver is forced to slam on their brakes and all tires lock up, they will actually skid much further than if the tires were allowed to slow down more naturally. ABS could be one of the most important safety inventions from the last 60 years that now comes standard on most vehicles.

Over the years, there of course have been advancements in technology. Wheel speed sensors have been upgraded to be more accurate. The hydraulic ABS valve that feeds the brakes and manages the fluid levels when ABS kicks in has seen improvements over the years, as well.
